It all started when…
Katherine and Ochuko met towards the end of their first year of residency. Although they both attended Stanford University, graduating only one year apart, they did not know each other at that time. Looking back, they realized that their social circles had significantly overlapped and they must have just missed meeting one another many times. It was through a mutual college friend, visiting from out of town, that they would finally meet in Boston. See if you can discover which of their friends is responsible for this at the wedding!
Things began cordially, then quickly progressed to mutual respect and eventually an easy sense of familiarity and comfort. The demands of their medical training, including long hours and early mornings, often required creative ways to spend time together. There were “lunch dates” in the cafeteria of one of their hospitals and post-call strolls across the connecting bridge of their two institutions. Eventually, fellowship match took Ochuko to Houston, TX and they began what would become two years of long distance. Despite long hours at the hospital, limited weekends off to visit one another, and only a few missed flights, these two years confirmed what both had suspected: that this relationship was very special.
Ochuko moved from his native Nigeria to the US with his family when he was 3. Katherine also moved when she was 3: all the way from Albany to Chappaqua. From the very beginning, the couple knew that their different backgrounds brought richness and depth to their relationship and their experiences together. They have been able to find a balance and harmony between their cultures, while also facing the common challenges of two young professionals juggling the demands of education, early careers, and long distance. They are excited to settle together in New York, a city with a long history of supporting multicultural communities and families.
